Jan 31 e-mail

Dear Dad and Mom, This past week was really pretty good. The people that were baptized this past week were confirmed yesterday. As for the rest of the week, it was pretty good. It was a little bit difficult finding people at their homes but all in all it was a good week. We didn't have a baptism this week but we have some people for this week that we are going to teach and get them ready.
So last Monday we went to the zoo with some ward members and it would have been a great day, but when we got there we saw the ostriches and some parrots and it started to rain, and rained and rained and rained and rained all day. We had to walk home in the rain. So we didn't even get to see many animals.
Tuesday we had a meeting with President a little bit about the missionary that went home and about some new rules that we have in the mission. This week should be pretty good.
We have a family home evening marked with some recent converts tonight and the family that got baptized last week. We have a family night marked with them tomorrow night.
We were supposed to have a talent show at our Ward on Saturday but that didn't happen because the bishopric that was organizing it didn't show up so I was a little sad about that. But that's about it that happened this week. We have interviews with Pres. on Thursday and I should get some cards who knows.
Dad I don't have Lex´s email address, if you could get that for me that would be awesome. But I love you all and I am praying for you. Love your son, Elder Crittenden

e-mail of Jan. 24th.

Dear Dad and Mom, This past week was really good. We had some miracles happen and also some not so good things happen. I will start off with the bad news, we had an Elder go home this past week and it was an Elder that was in my last district in Acailandia. I don't know why he was sent home but I knew him really well and he was a good friend.
Tomorrow one of my zone leaders and my other friend that is also living with us is going home. He completed his mission and will leave tomorrow, Elder Piacenti. So this next week we will be in a triplet with our other zone leader, Elder Romero.
This week was really a miracle. We had 4 baptisms and 3 of the 4 were the wife, son and daughter of a man who was less active and is now returning to the church and wants to seal his family in the temple. It was really a special experience to see the joy that it brought to this family. This man was and still is having a little bit of trouble with drinking and smoking but we are helping him with this and he has a strong desire to quit.
We had quite the experience on Saturday with our other baptism. So here's what happened. We had a baptism on Saturday and one on Sunday because President was traveling and he had to do our interview and could only do it on Sunday. But on Saturday we went to the church to clean out the baptismal font and the pump isn't working so we had to call the Elders from a ward close by. To get to their chapel you have to climb up two huge hills, so we called someone to give us and our investigators a ride. So everything went well until about an hour before the baptism. It started to rain, and it rained a lot. When the man came to give us a ride he showed up in a pickup truck to haul everybody up there. We were already late so we piled everyone in the back of the pickup and headed out from our chapel. When we got there everybody was already soaked and we had the baptism. Then on Sunday President did our interview and we decided to do the other baptisms in our chapel. So after church we went to lunch then came back to the chapel and my comp and I cleaned out the water with buckets and dumped the water in the toilet of the men's bathroom. We had a wonderful baptism. It was really amazing even though all of those things happened.
But I have learned one thing here in the mission is that nothing comes without a little bit of sacrifice and suffering but the miracles come. ,br>Well that was about all for my week and today we are actually going to go to the zoo. I hopeso. We got canceled on by everybody last week. So I love you all very much and will talk to you next week. Love your son, Elder Crittenden

January 17th e-mail

Dear Dad and Mom, So this week has been really good. We had two baptisms this week and we had a lot of lessons. We did some divisions with two kids that are getting ready to go on missions. They are just waiting for their calls to arrive. We taught a lot of people and had some really good lessons.
We also have been helping a lady in our ward to finish up her house and we got to destroy some stuff too, and we will be destroying more stuff this week. It should be really fun.
But we have been teaching this family that the Dad is a less active member and his wife and kids aren't but we are reactivating him and this week we are going to baptize his family. It has been quite a struggle with him though because he was a drunk and was really addicted to alcohol but we have managed to show him that through the atonement and the church he will be able to overcome this addiction. He hasn't drank for about 2 weeks now and they went to church yesterday and had a really good time. He is really excited to see his family be baptized and has a really strong testimony. I am really excited to see this family be baptized, last week for family home evening we watched a movie about the eternal family and afterwords I made pancakes and let them try maple syrup and they loved it. They want us to make more.
Well I am loving Teresina. It's a great city and I am loving the area a lot. Today we are going to the zoo and it should be a fun experience. I will take lots of pictures and try to remember to send them next week to you all.
Mom for an experience you can use the story of the family that I shared up above. One of the scriptures that we used was Alma 42:15. We helped him realize that Jesus suffered for the things that he felt and that he could feel clean from the things that he had done by repenting and returning to the church. It has been amazing the change that has happened in his life from drinking and to the place that he is now in the church and wanting to change. Yesterday we found his cousin and we found out some of the same problems in her house and we are going to try and help them out now. I can't really think of another story right now but I hope this helps you out.
This Thursday we were asked to do some skits for a ward activity and they have to be funny so we will see what we can come up with. That's about it for the wee., I Love you all very much and I miss you all. Love your son, Elder Crittenden

e-mail of Jan 10

Dear Dad and Mom,
Everything is going really good here in my new area I love it a lot. The members are helping us out a lot here and the work is really good. There are lots of people open to hearing about the gospel.
We had a leadership meeting with President this past week and so we did divisions with the Elders that were from the cities outside of Teresina. We got a lot of work done in our area. It helped out a lot.
This week we should have at least 2 baptisms but we are expecting 5 or 6 to be baptized. We started teaching lots of new families and in fact we are planning on having a wedding and baptism of a family that we began teaching.
It is the rainy season here in Teresina and it basically rains every day or every night. If it rains during the day, if we are lucky we wait it out in the members or investigators house but if we're not lucky we get rained on. It is really nice when it rains here because it isn't as hot and sometimes it's nice to get rained on.
So I only use my suit coat on Sundays if our chapel has air conditioning and our chapel here has it but it doesn't always work so I don't take it with me. We live really close to our chapel here, there is a school on the block next to us going towards the chapel. I will try and get the names of the cross streets and send it to you Dad.
I did get all three of my packages and I loved the pillow case. I am using it right now.
Well Mom one of my favorite Scriptures I would have to say is in Alma 7:11-16 that talks about the atonement of Jesus Christ and how much he suffered for us and also about baptism. I will think of a missionary experience and let you know next week in my letter I will think about it.
Well that's about all that I have to tell you about this week. I love you all and will talk to you next week. Love your son, Elder Crittenden

1/3/2011 First e-mail from Teresina

Dear Dad and Mom.
Things are going good here in the mission. Like I said last week I have been transferred and I am now in Teresina as the district leader.
It is pretty hot here but luckily I was transferred here after what is called the BR Bro which are the 4 months of SetemBRO, OutuBRO, NovemBRO, and DezemBRO which are the hottest here. Now it is the raining season here in Teresina.
So my new companions name is Elder Moraes. He is from Sao Paulo and he has only 3 months here in the missio. He is from my old comp/my sons group.
I am working in an area called Cidade Satelite (Satelite City). It is just one ward but it has 2 sets of missionaries in the ward.
I still don't know the address of our house exactly but it's located on a street called Mercurio. We live with the zone leaders which are Elders Piacenti, who is going home in 24 days and Elder Romero who I met at the MTC in Provo and will go home after me.
I don't know how many Elders are in Teresina but I would guess at least 40. There are only 6 Elders in my district so the area is really good the members here help out a lot and are giving references.
We should have some baptisms this week. We are teaching this lady called Jaqueline. She has already heard all of the lessons from the missionaries and her kids actually got baptized the week of Christmas and we are trying to get her baptized. We convinced her to go to church and she did and now we are helping her with Book of Mormon and some other doubts and other things about the church.
I can't believe that its already 2011. It doesn't even feel like it. I hope that you all had a very Merry Christmas and an excellent New Years.
One more of my packages did arrive at the mission office just waiting on one more. Oh and I found out today that we now have a new address for the mission. All cards and packages have to be shipped to this address now.
Missao Brasil Teresina
CP 2321
Teresina, PI

So if you could send that to everyone or at least let them know that would be great.
Well that's about all that I have to tell you this week. I will try to get my address and send it to you Dad.
I love you all very much
Love your son,
Elder Crittenden
